Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway!
The Donegal Women in Business Network has really pushed me to do exactly what I needed to do – Feel the fear and do it anyway! After a location move, a career change and feeling vulnerable having been out of the working game for a while, I was like a deer in the headlights at my first DWIBN event in January.
Evelyn Mc Glynn invited members to come up on stage to speak about their business for five minutes during the ‘Open Mic’ part of the night. I knew it was coming so had prepared myself a bit. But it took a lot of internal mental struggle to put up my hand and get off my seat to go up. “Ah, you can go up the next time when you’re more established and better prepared”, “You don’t really know what you’re doing yet”, “You’ll come off really badly and people will have no faith in you”. This was the internal dialogue I was battling with. Thankfully, something said “Damn it, just go for it”. And I did.
Well it wasn’t that bad. I wasn’t that bad. In fact, I got a job offer at the end of the night! I couldn’t believe it. I also met some amazing people that night who have helped me hugely on my new career path and whom I now call my friends. I remember driving home that night and I was buzzing. My creativity was flowing, ideas were coming to me and I was so excited about the future.
I am a huge advocate of the network. It doesn’t matter what your background is or what you’re looking to get out of it. You will get support in more ways than you can imagine from a group of women who are just like you. And you will have great craic while you’re doing it!
